Using the Smart Inbox editor

Write messages and notes, format text, create lists and add emojis across Smart Inbox channels.

Use the editor at the bottom of a Smart Inbox conversation to write messages or notes. Choose Email, SMS, WhatsApp or Note from the menu at the bottom left of the editor.

  • Email and Notes: full text formatting, including bold, italics, headings, colours, links and lists.

  • SMS: plain text with emojis. The SMS standard does not support text formatting.

  • WhatsApp: emojis and its own formatting for bold, italics, strikethrough and lists (see below).

Format text

In Email or Note mode, type your text, then select the words you want to change. A floating toolbar appears above the selection:

  • B makes text bold; I makes it italic.

  • Text size offers heading sizes, and Text color changes the colour.

  • More options (…) includes underline, strikethrough and clear formatting.

  • Link lets you add a web address to selected text.

Select some text first to see the text formatting toolbar:

Create bullet points or numbered lists

In Email or Note mode, start on a new line:

  • Bulleted list: type a hyphen (-), then press Space.

  • Numbered list: type 1. (including the full stop), then press Space.

Type your first item and press Enter for the next one. Press Enter twice after the last item to finish the list and return to normal text.

Format WhatsApp messages

WhatsApp uses text symbols for formatting: *bold*, _italic_ and ~strikethrough~. For bullet points, start each line with a hyphen and a space (- Item). For numbering, use a number, full stop and space (1. Item, 2. Item).

See WhatsApp’s formatting guide for more examples.

Add emojis

Emojis work in Email, SMS, WhatsApp and Notes. Type a colon followed by an emoji name, such as :smile, then click an emoji in the suggestions. You can also paste an emoji into your text.

Review and send

Check the selected channel, recipient and message before clicking Send. For emails, check the subject too. For notes, click Save.
