How to Send SMS to US contacts

When you message a US phone number via SMS, the contact must opt in first (10DLC compliance).

TalentLynk makes this easy with a built-in opt-in workflow inside the Smart Inbox.

Before you start

When you open an SMS thread with a US number, you’ll see a US SMS Compliance message explaining:

  • You must comply with 10DLC regulations

  • The contact must opt in (typically by texting YES)

  • How to collect consent (in person, on a call, via email, etc.)

  • The contact can opt out by texting STOP (and opt back in by texting YES)

Option 1: The contact opts in by texting “YES”

If the contact replies YES to your US number (or any number your business owns), you’re then free to message them via SMS as normal.

✅ Once they’ve opted in, the SMS message box becomes available and you can continue the conversation.

Option 2: Manually opt the contact in (from the Smart Inbox)

  1. Go to Smart Inbox

  2. Open the conversation for the contact with a US number

  3. Select SMS as the channel

  4. You’ll see a banner that says “This person must first opt-in to receive SMS”

  5. Click OPT-IN MANUALLY

Update the contact’s consent

  1. Choose what kind of messages can be sent:

    • Only conversational messages

    • Any messages, including marketing

  2. Under Where was the consent given?, select the source (e.g. Contact Form, Email, Phone Call, SMS, Verbal, WhatsApp)

  3. Click Save

What happens next

After you save, TalentLynk sends an opt-in confirmation message to the contact.

It looks like:
“Welcome! You’re opted-in to SMS communication
Text HELP for help, STOP to opt-out
”

✅ Once that message is sent, you can now type and send SMS messages normally.

Troubleshooting

"I can’t type an SMS message"
The contact isn’t opted in yet. Ask them to text YES, or use OPT-IN MANUALLY.

"The opt-in message shows as failed/rejected"
Double-check you’re messaging a US number from your US SMS line, then try again. If it continues, contact support with a screenshot of the thread.
